Submission

The Format

One way to win: submission

We use the EBI ruleset: no points, no advantages, only submissions. Adults compete in 4-minute rounds, kids in 3-minute rounds. If there's no submission, the match goes to overtime. Kids divisions use full mount and adults use back control or top armbar. Full rules are available on the Rules page.

EBI Overtime

What happens if nobody taps

4-minute rounds, submission only. If regulation ends with no tap, it's one overtime round each in back mount or the spiderweb - still tied after that, we rerun overtime under the same rules until there's a winner.

Kids divisions: overtime is in full mount instead, for safety.

Fighter A starts on top - back mount or spiderweb

Referee's call: back mount with hooks in, or the spiderweb (armbar with the attacker on top). Fighter B's clock starts the moment it locks in. An escape - or a submission - stops the clock; either way, that time is what Fighter A has to beat once the roles swap.

RULE - fastest escape or submission sets the time to beat.

FAQ

No points, no advantages, no judges' decision. A match is won by tap, verbal submission or ref stoppage. If time runs out with no submission, it goes straight to overtime.

One competitor starts in a dominant position - back mount or the spiderweb - while the other's escape is timed. Roles swap. Whoever escapes faster, or gets a submission, wins. Still tied after that? We rerun overtime under the same rules until there's a winner.

Only for the Gi divisions. No-Gi divisions just need a rashguard and grappling shorts or a singlet - check the current kit rules on the Smoothcomp event page.

Yes - kids divisions run alongside the adult card, matched by age and experience. See the Divisions section above for the general breakdown.

$15 NZD on the door. Free entry for kids under 16.

Every edition, the Open Weight winner and the athlete with the best submission each earn a golden ticket. On the 5th edition, every golden ticket holder faces off against each other - only golden ticket athletes can compete in it. It's a qualification path to one big night.
